  • The first research cruise of the R/V Oceanograf after class renovation

The research vessel UG R/V Oceanograf was on its first sea trials cruise. During it, scientists conducted biological and hydrological research. Further cruises are carried out using the most modern scientific and research unit in the Baltic Sea.

The research vessel UG R/V Oceanograf underwent a month-long class overhaul, carried out after the first five years of operation. – Individual elements have been checked by the relevant services. There were no major defects on the ship informs Filip Dąbrowski from the Office of the Rector’s Plenipotentiary for Maritime Infrastructure. – A few elements required attention, such as some of the floors in the most frequented places. The external hull of the ship was refreshed and “rebranded” along with a change of the logo – he adds. Thus, the ship was approved for further operation for the next five years. The renovation was carried out by NET MARINE – Marine Power Service Sp. z o.o., and took place at the MW shipyard in Gdynia.

    First research cruise

At the beginning of October, the first voyage was carried out, after docking the unit. Employees and students of the Institute of Oceanography of the University of Gdańsk conducted the first research in nine points of the Puck Bay. – The status of bottom fish habitats in the area of the Kosakowo Underground Gas Storage Cavern was carried out – informs PhD Mariusz Sapota, prof. UG, director of the Institute of Oceanography of the Faculty of Oceanography and Geography of the University of Gdańsk. – Min. covering the bottom with macrophytes by collecting plant samples and the basic hydrological parameters of water: temperature, salinity and oxygenation. An underwater vehicle was used in the work and fish were also caught in this area – explains Dr. Hab. Mariusz Sapota, prof. UG.

According to the participants, at each point, profiles from the surface to the bottom were made using the CTD probe, determining the temperature, salinity and oxygenation of the water. The next stage of work was fishing in all designated points. On eight of them, multi-panel sets of gillnets were set up, and at the deepest point (14B) a bottom trawl was hauled. The next day, a detailed ichthyological analysis of the catches was started. The most modern and most versatile scientific and research vessel in the Baltic Sea region, continues oceanographic research in various regions of the Baltic Sea.
